CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - It's okay to admit it  your New Year's Resolution is to lose weight!  Well since it's the last day of 2012, we'll give you a head start with easy tips for cutting calories, eating better, and losing weight!
Dr. Laura Hutchinson shared some weight loss advice.
Get moving!
Going from 24 hours on the couch to 2 hours at the gym every day will lead to burnout and injury. Physical activity doesn't have to mean exercise. Start with something maneagable like a walk around the block after dinner each night.
Plan ahead.
If you have healthy food on hand, like nuts, fruit, yogurt, and veggies, you are less likely to find yourself at the convenience store with a snickers bar in hand.
Eat a fruit or vegetable at every meal.
These will help fill you up before yu overindulge. A good rule of thumb is to fill half your plate with fruit and veggies and the other half with a combination of prootein and starch. You can also use a smaller plate (salad plate) to reduce over all portion size.
Eat regularly.
If you try to "save up" for the big party and starve yourself all day, you will end up eating like it is the last meal of your life. If you know you are going to be eating again in a few hours, you are less likely to overdo.
look for sugar on the ingredients list. And avoid it as much as possible. The average American eats over 100lbs of added sugar per year. Try sweetening your meals with fruit instead, and saving the "empty calories for special treats. Losing weight in 2013 is a common New Year's resolution, but experts say that few of them take the necessary steps to accomplish their goal.
"January is the time of year when gyms get flooded with new and returning members ready to try Zumba or spin classes, and dieters start filling their grocery carts with fruits and vegetables instead of chips and cookies," Alenka Ravnik-List, diabetes program coordinator at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, said in a center news release. "But unfortunately, too often people with good intentions will fail."
But following a few rules can help people change their lifestyle and lose weight.
Ravnik-List offered the following advice:
• Don't skip breakfast. Research shows that eating breakfast every day can help you lose weight and keep it off.
• Keep a journal of everything you eat. People who keep food diaries eat about 15 percent less food than those who don't.
• Get walking. Sedentary people take only about 3,000 steps a day. Adding another 3,000 steps will help you maintain your current weight and getting more than 10,000 steps a day will help you lose weight.
• Watch your serving sizes. Eat meals on a medium-sized plate (about eight to nine inches wide). A bigger plate encourages you to eat more because you can fit more food on it. Load half of your plate with colorful vegetables and the other half with lean protein and whole grain starches.
• Weigh yourself at least once a week. Doing so will help you detect small weight gains before they get out of control.
